Croc Quiz (attempt #2)
First off, what's with all the flack about posting the pics wrong the first time? Some of you whippersnappers should remember that not everyone here was born with a PC stapled to their hands. Some of us got our Commodore 64 sometime after puberty! Cut us old folks a break, puh-leeze!
That said, I *think* the images (or links to them) will appear below. Remember the rules: 1. Please give Latin and common names. 2. Spelling counts. 3. Use only the information already in your brain -- it's no fair to look stuff up! 4. I'll post answers in 1 week. 5. The winner gets to gloat until the next quiz. Also remember that this is the 'easy' quiz. They will get harder. And the last 2 pictures are of the same species, so there are really only 5 species represented here. Good luck! ![]() |
I should add that in picture #5 you are looking at the center animal only. The others are a different species. Bonus points though if you correctly identify them too (hint: they are all the same species).
|
The first one is a slender snouted crocodile (Crocodylus cataphractus), the second one is and albino american alligator (Alligator mississippiensis), the third one is a saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus), the fourth one is a dwarf crocodile (Osteolaemus tetraspis)
the fiveth one is a specticaled caiman (Caiman crocodilus) with a group of normal american alligators (Alligator mississippiensis), i can't make out the sixth though maybe a brod snouted caiman (Caiman latirostris). |
yeah what HERPKING said! lol :D

Okay. I'm a bit late with the answers - but here they are:
1. Tomistoma schlegelii - Malayan false gavial 2. Alligator mississippiensis - American alligator 3. Crododylus porosus - saltwater crocodile 4. Alligator sinensis - Chinese alligator 5. Caiman latirostris - broad snouted caiman with American alligators Is anyone interested in a second round? Perhaps we'll make it easier by allowing you to look stuff up. Let me know if you want more. |
7 out of 15? I don't understand the scoring..
1) Since the animal lacks Post-occipital scutes, I'm going to disagree with Herpking and say it's a Tomistoma (T. schlegelii) 2) Amelanistic American alligator. (A. mississippiensis) 3) Saltwater crocodile (C. porosus) 4) Dwarf crocodile; Which one; can't tell so I'll say West african dwarf crocodile (O. t. tetraspis) 5) A Spectacle caiman (Also number 6) (C.crocodilus) among American alligators (A. mississippiensis) Zane |
Make another quiz, that was fun to read, and great job to both HerpKing and to Zane!

I'll try to get on it this weekend.
As for the scoring - 3 points per question; one for the common name, one for the latin name, one for spelling. Or at least I think that's what I did. Can't really remember now... |
Quiz #2
Here we go again. And there is a bonus (non-crocodilian) species ID for you.
Reminder of the rules: Please provide latin name and common name, and spelling does count! #1 #2 #3 #4 - The animal at the top of the picture only #5 Bonus: ![]() |
